A quite exceptional early George III Period Mahogany Coffer/Box, the rectangular, crossbanded and line inlaid hinged top opening to reveal a substantial storage area and the whole raised on shaped bracket feet with hidden casters and retaining the original massive brass carrying handles to the sides and central brass locking plate to the front.

Notes: In Thomas Chippendale’s “The Gentleman and Cabinetmaker’s Director” plate IC has an illustration of a “Cloth Press” and a “Cloths Chest” the latter of which is an illustration of this form of piece. It was published in the first edition of 1754.
