Chinese 19th. Century Black Lacquered Cabinet
19th. Century Black Lacquered Chinese Cabinet on later stand.
The doors on this cabinet have provided the craftsmen of Shanxi Province with the opportunity to illustrate two intriguing scenes from grand Chinese Courtyard house living. The faded multi coloured pictures illustrate the architecture of the houses framed by large trees and populated with prominent officials and beautiful women.
Chinese houses traditionally had no built in storage so cabinets were a necessity as well as an opportunity to display the prosperity of the family. This would therefore have come from a prominent home in Shanxi Province.
The design for the modern stand is taken from old designs with its horsehoof feet and gooseneck braces
