A black wool Officer's Mess Waistcoat

Code: 400Y

Ca. 1865

A black wool officer’s Mess Waistcoat, backed in silk and lined in fine cotton.   The waistcoat is handstitched, with the high collar and front trimmed with a double edge of gilt trim and the whole front embellished with tightly sewn teat studs in gilt brass.  The fastening is with hidden hooks and eyes, and two small front pockets are outlined in gilt trim.   This waistcoat was probably made for Lt A A D Weigall, whose Regiment was the 57th (West Middlesex).  Lt Weigall was gazetted Lt Colonel on November 28 1876, and died during the Regiment’s campaign on the North West Frontier.
