A few weeks ago I acquired a fabulous Burr Oak Side Table and this has now come on show. All we have done is give this piece a thundering good wax up - it was so dry and in need of nourishment that all the wax we applied to it was just drawn into the timber until finally it was satiated and we could burnish the top surface
Burr Oak is most certainly the most sought after of all the varieties and cuts of Oak which were available. A burr is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on the tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds and it does have a spectacular effect. Pieces made of solid burr oak are extremely rare and to find a single piece measuring three feet wide by two feet deep is virtually unheard of. Just imagine if you will the size of the outgrowth that this must have come from and then try to estimate the size of the mighty oak tree this must have been to support a growth of this size!
I have attached below a close up of the top from this table to give a better idea of the complexity of the grain on this and you can clearly see just how fabulous this looks.
After over 300 years it was very satisfying to see how quickly this came back to life with just a few coats of wax and this supports another of the founding principles of Harvey's Antiques over the past 65 years. Only buy a piece if it is all there and only in need of sympathetic reviving to bring it back to life with a service of any moving parts!
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
