Circa 1880 – This is very much in the Arts and Crafts Movement style, the metamorphic Reading Stand with pegged side columns and fretwork brackets on trestle-end bases with castors, the ratcheted adjustable rising top with a book rest. The Arts and Crafts movement was founded in the 1860s as an answer to the increasing volume of machine made furniture and objects and to emphasise the beauty of items made by hand. William Morris was a leading member and Liberty & Co. in London were leading proponents of the movement.
Important Note: Increasingly we are all being told by medical practitioners that we should stand to work as sitting for long periods is bad for one’s health. This Reading Stand with it’s removable book ledge is the ideal solution providing an eminently height and rake adjustable table which is also quite beautiful to own.
