Circa 1765 – The design for this model is taken from the French Commode or chest of drawers with its 3 dimensional serpentine shape which was illustrated and popularised by Thomas Chippendale in his famous work “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director”. Several variants by Chippendale are illustrated and this example with the bold serpentine front echoed by the shaped sides and apron is a very English interpretation.
Whether this fine example did actually come from Chippendale’s workshops or one of his contemporaries in London such as Ince and Mayhew, John Cobb, William and John Linnell etc. is not known at this time but the quality is outstanding.
