Regency Period Rosewood and Brass Inlaid Writing Slope

£2,350.00

Circa 1810 - Regency Period Rosewood and Brass Inlaid Campaign Writing Slope of outstanding quality and provenance with a rising section containing four drawers with lion’s head ring handles and leather-lined slopes. When first opened the rising section is just visible but secured with two sliding bolts. This can be raised and is supported by sprung side flaps and once the superior slope is opened this reveals a false platform which can be removed to reveal a further void and the spring-loaded fascia can be released by inserting a pin into the hole on the right-hand corner just above the false platform. This reveals three further small drawers beneath the brass screw-capped glass inkwells and the box has inset brass carrying handles to the sides. H: 8”,20 cms, W:19 ”,48.5 cms, D:13 ”,33 cms.

Description

Circa 1810 – Inscribed in ink into the bottom of the rising section is the name and address; Richard Stephens, 56 Gt Marelebone St, Port Land Place. (Great Marylebone Street and Portland Place) See London Street Directory 1843, Stephens, Richard (of Marsala), Merchant. He appears to have had a business address of 4 New London Street which is just by the Customs Warehouse next to Tower Bridge. He became a partner in Inghams, Stephens and Co. in 1826. Robson Street Directory in 1832 has 56 Great Marylebone Street as Lamb, S and Dearlove, Agnes, Tobacconist. One of the rising section drawers has the name and address: G G Vernon, Netherton, Nr. Ledbury and this would have been the hamlet of Netherton near Elmley Castle in Worcestershire rather than the much larger Netherton near Birmingham. There are also various papers etc and notes all from the Ledbury area with the box all referring to Mr John Hooper and including a bill for a topcoat at 30/- and boot repairs and supplies at 13/6p. They all date from about 1869 and 1870. We, therefore, have the provenance of this box as made for Richard Stephens of Great Marylebone Street and passing firstly to G G Vernon from Netherton and thence to John Hooper of Ledbury.
