Late 19th century square Brass Lidded Coal Bucket by Tonks raised on finely detailed dragon’s feet. This piece retains the original inner liner with handles and the finial to the lid. It also retains the brass carrying handles to the sides and neo-classical detail to the tapering sides. The feet are all stamped with the registered mark No: 48608 (which is catalogued as being for the year 1886) and W.T.& S. (W Tonk & Sons) along with their eight-pointed “sun” trade mark. Tonks were one of the most prestigious of the Birmingham Brass Founders. They were originally founded in 1789 winning gold medals at the 1851 and 1862 Exhibitions in London and in Paris in 1855.
